Hit by earthquakes at home and floods abroad, and punished by the strengthening of the Japanese yen, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan have been pummeled this year. News of their activities has been pushed to the back pages while Hyundai, Kia, and German automakers dominate the headlines. As a result, 2012 is shaping up as a benchmark year for these once-unstoppable companies. Will they be able to regain the momentum that once helped push two of the Detroit Three into bankruptcy? Or will they continue their slide as they fight each other -- and try to cope with forces that are out of their control? Toyota already sells about 140,000 Priuses a year and believes that the entire line will surpass the Camry in volume by the second half of the decade. |

The new model coming in the fall (2012 is pictured above) is key to Nissan reaching its 10% goal for 2014 growth set by CEO Carlos Ghosn. That would push Nissan past Hyundai-Kia and Honda and into fifth place in U.S. sales. |

Their progress rates will be watched closely to see if buyers move out of the early-adopter category and into the mainstream. |

Among the Accord variations will be a plug-in hybrid that runs 15 miles per charge. |

Acura's new emphasis, the company says, will be on "fun technologies" and "environmental performance. The compact ILX will be the automaker's entry-level model, replacing the TSX (above). Based on the Honda Civic, it is due to reach dealers in the spring and will include a hybrid model, Acura's first. |

It will also feature engine, transmission, body, and chassis upgrades. They'll need to be successful if Mazda is to reach its goal of selling 400,000 vehicles annually in the U.S. by 2014. For the first 11 months of 2011, the automaker sold 228,073, a 12% gain over a year ago. |

Set to go on sale in the spring, it is an attempt to extend Subaru's image beyond the utilitarian Outback and Forester. Subaru was restrained in 2011 by supply shortages caused by the Japanese tsunami, and it is looking at boosting production in North America to ease constraints. It is aiming to sell 300,000 vehicles in the U.S. next year vs. an estimated 260,000 in 2011. |
