FyrFlyz
Company: i-Star Entertainment
Location: Great Neck, N.Y.
Price: $9.99
Age: 8 and up
Joel Rosenzweig wanted to do something extra special for his son's Bar Mitzvah last year. The something special turned out to be a new toy, which isn't much of a surprise. Rosenzweig is a 20-year veteran of the toy industry and heads i-Star Entertainment, a toy maker with eight employees. With just a few weeks to go before the family event, he got cracking on a prototype.
Taking two pieces of plastic tied together, tiny lights and string he created what would become FyrFlyz. The idea is to grab the ends of the string and spin the toy quickly until it becomes taut. The lights made different patterns with each spin.
Rosenzweig handmade 140 and gave them out at the Bar Mitzvah. "The kids started playing with them and immediately knew how to use them," he said. "I knew I had something." Two days later, he was on a plane to Hong Kong to find a manufacturer to make FyrFlyz.
FyrFlyz, which looks a little bit different than the prototype, launched last month in the United States in toy stores and drug stores nationwide. It's a simple, battery-operated hour glass-shaped plastic shell with LED lights on both ends. "The $10 price is also key in this economy," said Rosenzweig.
FyrFlyz has already made it on to several hottest toys lists for 2011 and won three prestigious awards, included Time to Play's "Top 15 most-wanted holiday toys for 2011."
Not resting on his laurels, Rosenzweig is already extending the line. Next spring, FyrFlyz will come in three different colors and maybe even include music, he said.
Ickee Stikeez
Company: Zing Toys
Location: Portland, Ore.
Price: $1.25 for single pack; $2.99 for a triple pack
Age: 4 and up
Zing Toys may have the cute answer to popping bubble wrap.
Ickee Stikeez, tiny, squishy, collectible monster figures, have tiny suction cups for feet. Kids can stick them anywhere, or keep them in their round plastic pods.
The best part, though, is the popping noise that they make when pulled off of a surface. They also appeal to kids' tendency to collect items. But parents don't have to dole out lots of money either. Each of the 24 characters costs just $1.25.
"Our goal was to make a cool, fun and innovative product that was high on play value but very low on the cost," said Josh Loerzel, executive with five-year-old Zing Toys, a small Portland toymaker with 30 employees. "We believe in making toys that are built on imagination, don't require any battery and kids can play with anywhere."
Loerzel said there's also a functional value to Ickee Stikeez that grownups might appreciate. "If you're at a party and you don't want your glass mixed up, just stick a distinctive Ickee Stikeez on it," he said.
Loerzel said the company is taking the same creative approach it adopts to make toys to also build buzz about them. "We're a small business and we're supporting small business," he said. "So we launched Ickee Stikeez last month through 5,000 independent gift and toy stores." Zing Toys is also shunning expensive TV ads and going viral, instead.
"If we go to lunch, we leave Ickee Stikeez on the table or on the check. Funny thing is, when we go back, we find them there on the cash registers," said Loerzel.
Skylee and Mechatars
Company: Bossa Nova Robotics
Location: Pittsburgh
Price: Skylee: $59.99; Mechatars: $39.99
Age: Skylee: 4 and up; Mechatars: 6 and up
Don't let the name fool you. Bossa Nova Robotics is actually a toymaker.
Sarjoun Skaff, who founded the company with two other colleagues, was working on his Ph.D. in robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. He was building a robot for the defense department when he started to think about how he could translate that same technology to create consumer products, specifically toys.
In 2005, Skaff cofounded Bossa Nova Robotics, an offshoot of Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute. But he wasn't in a rush to invade the toy industry. Instead, he went to China and lived there for two years, doing research on toy manufacturing in a bid to find the best maker for his toys. In 2009, the company launched Penbo, a penguin built on similar robotics technology that Skaff worked on for the defense department.
"Penbo waddles. Penbo also interacts with kids through infrared technology and touch sensors," said Skaff. What's more, Penbo carries an egg that opens up into a baby penguin. "With our technology, we created a realistic mother-daughter interaction. And Penbo would talk to her baby and even play hide-and-seek with her," said Skaff.
This year, Bossa Nova Robotics added a new character to the Penbo & Friends line called Skylee, an adorable interactive dragon. Skylee sings, dances, and plays hide-and-seek with her own dragon baby.
There's more. For two years, Skaff and his team have worked on Mechatars, toy robots that become smarter the more often a child plays with them. Skaff said kids can play with Mechatars offline or connect Mechatars to their computer and watch the robotic characters come alive online and play there. "It's a form of blended reality," he said.
Both Skylee and Mechatars just launched at Target, Amazon and Toys R Us nationwide.
"We are robot enthusiasts. We also spend a lot of time understanding kids and how they are playing," said Bossa Nova Robotics cofounder Martin Hitch. "We are creating toys that are truly innovative at prices that parents feel good about."
Annoying Orange
Company: The Bridge Direct
Location: Boca Raton, Fla.
Price: $9.99 for plush toys and collectible figures
Age: 4 and up
It was only a matter of time before the Annoying Orange got its own line of toys.
The Annoying Orange is an animated web series created by Dane Boedigheimer, featuring a variety of talking fruits and vegetables. Boedigheimer brought the characters to life by superimposing his own eyes and mouth on them.
The main character is the orange, who tries to annoy the kitchen crew with his hilarious and sarcastic exchanges.
The webisodes became a hit and now boast over 800 million views on YouTube.
Toymaker The Bridge Direct, which scored its first massive toy hit last year with its exclusive Justin Bieber dolls, quickly jumped onto this viral trend after spotting its explosive popularity.
"We pride ourselves in keeping a pulse on what kids are following," said George Vorkas, general manager with The Bridge Direct. "We noticed the Annoying Orange web videos two years ago and kept an eye on it ever since."
When Annoying Orange hit nine million fans on Facebook, Vorkas said the company decided to pull the trigger and lock in a license to produce a toy line. "Annoying Orange has the same fun factor as Angry Birds," he said.
In November, Annoying Orange fans will be able to buy plush characters and a collection of six talking Annoying Orange figures, each with their own annoying phrases. All the toys launch exclusively at Toys R Us.
Air Swimmers and My Keepon
Company: Wow!Stuff
Location: Wolverhampton, England
Price: $49.99 for both toys
Age: Air Swimmers: 8 and up; My Keepon: 6 and up
UK-based Wow! Stuff launches its toys for the first time in the United States, and it's doing it with a bang.
Just two years ago, Wow!Stuff, a toymaker with 50 full-time employees, decided to move away from being a toy importer to a toymaker.
"We didn't want to sell other people's products anymore," said Richard North, CEO of Wow!Stuff. So North and two other colleagues assembled a team of inventors, some of whom were scientists, and embarked on a mission to create exciting, innovative toys. Their mantra was "Wow! Or nothing!"
"Dave the robotic funky shoulder monkey" was the first toy Wow!Stuff produced in 2009. "We sold 300,000 of those but none in the United States," said North. A year later, a friend proposed a meeting with Toys R Us, and North jumped on it. "We literally flew across the pond for a 10-minute chance to present our ideas to Toys R Us," he said. That meeting ended up running four hours.
"They loved our ideas," he said, so much so that Toys R Us immediately locked Wow!Stuff in a deal to debut the company's next two toy products exclusively at Toys R Us stores in the United States and worldwide just in time for the 2011 holiday season.
The first is Air Swimmers, which include a four-foot-long floating remote-controlled shark and giant clownfish. The second toy is My Keepon, an interactive dancing robot that was initially developed to help autistic children. It responds to poking, patting, squeezing and tickling. My Keepon goes on sale on Nov. 3. Air Swimmers hit stores last month.
"The response has been tremendous. Toys R Us said they'll buy as many [of the toys] as we can make," he said.
| FyrFlyz Company: i-Star Entertainment Location: Great Neck, N.Y.
| Skylee and Mechatars Company: Bossa Nova Robotics Location: Pittsburgh Price: Skylee: $59.99; Mechatars: $39.99 Age: Skylee: 4 and up; Mechatars: 6 and up Don't let the name fool you.
