The starting lineup
Unlike fantasy baseball, bigtime fantasy business leagues don't exist. But what if they did -- and you got the first nine draft picks? As the baseball season heats up, we couldn't resist pondering that question, and we've arrived at an answer: Ladies and gentlemen, for the 2011 season of Major League Business, we present our Dream Team.
We're reluctant to admit that a serious purpose lurks behind this exercise in summertime fun, but it does. Especially in today's economic tumult, business is getting to be the way sports have always been: Human capital is the whole game. The world's wealth comes increasingly from companies that need little physical capital but require tons of human talent, knowledge, and creativity. Making judgments about people is becoming the central managerial skill.
To choose our players, we studied the stats, interviewed the scouts (executive headhunters), and looked at MVPs, past and present. Our goal: to field a team that could coalesce and dominate in any industry. Competition was fierce, so congratulations to everybody on the roster: They're the 1927 Yankees of today's business world.
At least we think so. Truth is, you could advance a plausible case for someone else in each position. And perhaps you'd set up the team differently, swapping out the design chief, say, for a chief revenue officer. (To pick your roster, visit fortune.com.) And thank goodness. 1. Ken Chenault, Chief Executive Officer
CEO, American Express
The CEO of our Executive Dream Team needs to be respected, admired, a team builder -- and good in the clutch. American Express skipper Chenault, 60, has all those qualities and more: He had a steady hand through the last financial crisis, he's expanded into new areas like bank-issued AmEx cards, and, crucially, he's considered a good boss.
2. Jim Skinner, Chief Operating Officer
CEO, McDonald's
It would be a cliché to say Skinner runs a tight ship (and corny too: He's a Navy vet) if it weren't completely on the mark. The McDonald's CEO places a high emphasis on efficiency at the 33,000-restaurant company, working hard to make sure new products are crowd pleasers and moneymakers.
3. Aditya Mittal, Chief Financial Officer
CFO, ArcelorMittal
Despite being the son of ArcelorMittal's founder, Mittal, 35, worked his way up to CFO of the steel company in 2004. He orchestrated the $38 billion takeover of Arcelor, reduced corporate debt, and is helping execute an ambitious expansion plan. Mittal is a well-rounded executive who has the CEO's ear -- and not just because he's a relative.
4. Jim Stengel, Chief Marketing Officer
Former Global Marketing Officer, Procter & Gamble
At P&G, Stengel, 56, oversaw an $8-billion-a-year advertising budget. Today Stengel runs his own consulting company and sits on the boards of AOL and Motorola Mobility, which makes him current on wireless and social-media trends now reshaping marketing -- so we snapped up this free agent for our Dream Team.
5. Anne Mulcahy, Nonexecutive Chair
Former Chair and CEO, Xerox
The former Xerox CEO is tough, she knows her way around a turnaround (she revived Xerox), and she's an independent thinker, things we'd want in a board chair. And, having seamlessly handed the Xerox CEO-ship to Ursula Burns in 2009, Mulcahy, 58, would push our Dream Team to find their successors, never easy for corporate masters of the universe to do.
6. Jonathan Ive, Design Chief
SVP of Industrial Design, Apple
Not every company has a designer in its executive ranks, but many would benefit from employing Apple design chief Jony Ive. The 44-year-old Brit, who joined Apple in 1992, has played an instrumental role in making Apple's products and services consistently coveted and easy to use, shining a spotlight on the business value of good design.
7. Rob Carter, Chief Information Officer
CIO, FedEx
FedEx didn't start out as a high-tech company, but CIO Carter has made it one, implementing wireless systems and social-media technology well ahead of other corporations. Carter, 52, who manages more than $1 billion in spending each year, has long understood that IT isn't just a way to make workers more efficient -- he's turned it into FedEx's competitive edge.
8. Susan Chambers, Chief People Officer
EVP, People Division, Wal-Mart
When a company employs 2.1 million people, as Wal-Mart does, human resources isn't merely a support function, it is core. And so Chambers, 54, manages beyond health plans and training (though that's a big part of what she does); she's essential to the company's international expansion, which involves adding 500,000 jobs to its workforce between 2010 and 2015.
9. Carlos Brito, Designated Hitter
CEO, Anheuser-Busch InBev
In our fantasy C-Suite we'd love to have Anheuser-Busch InBev's Brito on the bench as our go-to slugger. A Brazilian who runs a Belgian company, he's a truly global exec who's deft at managing mergers and making his corporation nimble. To facilitate better communication, no one at A-B InBev headquarters has a private office -- not even Brito.
