7大车型拯救美国汽车业

底特律三大车商卷土重来,但是他们尚未彻底摆脱麻烦。以下七款车型有望保证他们奔驰在盈利的康庄大道上。

    美国三大汽车厂商在2009年的经济危机中都遭逢了灭顶之灾。他们之所以最终都大难不死,而且现在还在赢利,并非是由于美国车的质量高人一等。首先是因为通用汽车(General Motors)和克莱斯勒(Chrysler)的破产让这两家公司“洗心革面”,其次是福特(Ford)在危急时刻获得了及时的财务救助。各厂商现在已经开始对最新款的车型进行全面铺货,不过这些车型差不多都是在金融危机以前研发的。像福特翼虎(Escape)和雪佛兰英帕拉(Impala)等车型,它们的设计蓝本还是基于十多年前的设计。

Building a future

    Although they are getting better, the quality of American cars isn't what kept the Detroit Three afloat during the 2009 crisis and keeps them profitable now. Rather, it was the cleansing effects of bankruptcy at General Motors and Chrysler, and some timely financial engineering at Ford. Even the newest cars arriving in showrooms this fall were developed prior to the existential crisis. Indeed, some models like the Ford Escape and Chevrolet Impala are based on designs that are more than a decade old.

    Going forward, that will change. The demands of growing international markets and the requirements of global platforms will speed the obsolescence of Detroit's car lines. Vehicles that are too big, too thirsty, or otherwise ill-adapted for driving outside North America will face a higher hurdle to justify their survival. Herewith, a gallery of models on which Detroit can build its future.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze

    After a string of small-car flops dating back to the Vega in the 1970s, Chevy has a hit on its hands. The Cruze beat out its import competition to become the second-best-selling car in America in July. Designed in Korea and engineered in Germany, it is the very definition of a global car. A Buick version, the Verano, will debut shortly.

    SUVs don't resonate as personal transportation overseas -- they are too big and drink too much gas -- but Jeep-branded vehicles are the exception. Engineered from Mercedes components, the Grand Cherokee is versatile and solidly built. It can easily be marketed as a luxury vehicle in developing countries.

2011 Buick Regal

    The fifth generation of a venerable Buick model qualifies for an international passport. It is based on an Opel design and went on sale in Shanghai in November 2009, a year ahead of North America. The Buick brand is popular in China and is undergoing a revival in the U.S. A mild hybrid version will be available in the 2012 model year.

2011 Ford Fiesta

    If the Fiesta had a passport, all its pages would be stamped. The current generation is built in Europe, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, China, India, Thailand, and South Africa and is marketed worldwide. It's available in four body styles, depending on the country; you won't find any three-door hatches or two door vans sold in the U.S.

2011 Ford Focus

    Before 2011, American customers had to make do with a lesser Focus, but with the launch of this third-generation car, it is on the same page as the rest of the world. An all-electric Focus comes later. Of the more than 50 models Ford sells around the world, Focus ranks second in unit sales; Fiesta is first.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

    GM proclaimed the 2013 Malibu's global ambitions when it unveiled the car in New York and Shanghai simultaneously in April. The previous Malibu was a stay-at-home auto, marketed only in North America. GM plans to sell the car in nearly 100 countries but to supply them all from two U.S. plants. As a midsize sedan, it will likely be marked as a near-luxury car.

    Dodge gets a big helping of Fiat small-car technology with a new compact sedan based on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. Fiat will also provide one of its signature MultiAir engines.
