Patricia A. Woertz

Western-Pennsylvanian Patricia Woertz was interested in the corporate world from an early age.
"Mom worked as a school librarian, and she felt summers were for education," Woertz told Fortune in 2006. Spending the sweaty vacation days in gems like a Heinz ketchup plant or a U.S. Steel mill, she found the production process fascinating.
Fast forward to 1974. Woertz graduated from Penn State University with a degree in accounting. She became a consultant at Ernst & Young in Pittsburgh and moved to Gulf Oil several years later.
After Gulf and Chevron merged in 1984, Woertz created many new contacts and eventually made a move to Chevron, taking charge of the company's "downstream" operation.
Ready for a CEO position, but realizing that then-Chevron CEO David O'Reilly was several years from retiring, she stepped down from her position in February 2006.
The following April, Tom Neff of Spencer Stuart called Woertz and discussed a CEO opportunity at ADM. The rest is history.
As CEO, Woertz has led ADM while serving on the boards of directors of Procter & Gamble and the U.S.-China Business Council. Oh, and she's a mother to three children.
Angela F. Braly
Company: WellPoint, Inc.

Born in Dallas, Angela Braly followed up her undergraduate years at Texas Tech University by heading to law school at Southern Methodist University School of Law.
Three years ago, Braly returned to her undergraduate alma mater and shared that law school was a helpful, albeit incidental, factor in shaping her path to the CEO's chair.
"It was practicing law that led me into the Blue Cross Blue Shield system," Braly said. "I became general counsel of Blue Cross Blue Shield in Missouri, then president in Missouri, and worked my way up to president and CEO of the parent company [WellPoint]."
With three children, climbing the corporate ladder hasn't always been easy. But Braly's family has been supportive, allowing her to lead WellPoint, which generated operating revenue in excess of $57.8 billion in 2010.
Indra K. Nooyi
Company: PepsiCo

While a student at Yale's business school, Indra Nooyi found herself broke and outfit-less before an interview. Out of necessity, she says she wore a sari after being told by a friend, "If they don't hire you for who you are, then they don't deserve you." Nooyi got the job.
Starting at a textile firm in India, Nooyi had stints at The Boston Consulting Group, Motorola, and Asea Brown Boveri.
She joined PepsiCo in 1994. In 2001, Nooyi was made president and CFO at the company. In October 2006, she became PepsiCo's CEO.
Nooyi has been lauded for her innovations since becoming CEO. She has focused on diversifying PepsiCo's offerings, focusing on healthy products while still promoting the classic sugar-in-a-can Pepsi cola. She is also married with two children.
Irene B. Rosenfeld

Years ago, when Irene Rosenfeld was getting ready to graduate from Cornell with a degree in psychology, it would have seemed wild to think that she would come to spend 29 years of her life in the food and beverage industry.
But after earning a Ph.D. in marketing and statistics and an MBA, Rosenfeld found herself at General Mills, which eventually became a part of Kraft in 1981.
She was a rising star at Kraft, and ultimately decided to leave the company in 2004 to become the CEO and chair of Frito-Lay.
In 2006, she returned to Kraft as their CEO and chair. She led the company in acquiring British candy giant Cadbury in 2010, and the company generated $48 billion in revenues that same year.
Rosenfeld had two children, Allison and Carol, with her late husband, Phillip. She is now remarried to investment banker Richard Illgen.
Lynn L. Elsenhans
Company: Sunoco

According to Lynn Elsenhans' alma mater, Rice University, she did it all as a student: she was on the school's first women's intercollegiate basketball team, in the marching band, served on student government, and was the sports editor for the student newspaper. A case of foreshadowing, perhaps.
After graduating from Rice in 1978, Elsenhans headed to Harvard Business School, earned her MBA, and ended up at energy giant Shell. As the keys to the corporate kingdom came within her reach, Elsenhans realized that she and her husband would have to move to Europe if she wanted to stay at the company.
Around that time, Philadelphia-based Sunoco offered Elsenhans the CEO spot, making her the first female to run the oil giant. "It's a really good fit for me," she told Rice Magazine in 2008. "I worked for 28 years in the downstream part of the oil business -- oil and chemical products -- and that's what Sunoco does."
Gail P. Kelly
Company: Westpac Banking

Originally from South Africa, Gail Kelly headed to Australia in 1997. Before the move, Kelly was a history teacher at a government school in her home country. But she hated it.
In 1980, her father introduced her to an acquaintance at Nedcor Bank and she started work as a teller. She took a brief hiatus -- while pregnant -- in 1986 to get her MBA and returned to work in early 1987.
As South Africa's political climate turned tumultuous, Kelly and her family decided to move to Australia.
Joining St. George's Bank in 2002, Kelly moved quickly up the ladder and became CEO that same year (the CEO at the time died of a heart attack). After doubling the bank's net assets during her five-and-a-half- year tenure, Kelly moved to Westpac in February of 2008.
Under Kelly, Westpac merged with St. George's in 2008. With four kids, Kelly has cited her husband's support as the reason she's able to do it all.
Ellen J. Kullman
Company: DuPont

With a master's degree in management from Northwestern University -- which she received after studying mechanical engineering at Tufts -- Ellen Kullman headed to General Electric.
She moved to DuPont in 1988 as a marketing manager and has been with the company for over 20 years. In 2006, Kullman was named EVP and manned the company's business platforms, as well as marketing and sales.
In January 1, 2009, Kullman became DuPont's first female CEO. In the past year, the company's
Kullman recently told PBS, "Parenting is good training to be CEO because we can't control our children's actions, right? It helped me understand that just because I said so, wasn't a reason for them to do anything."
Cynthia Carroll
Company: Anglo American PLC

With a master's degree in geology from the University of Kansas and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Cynthia Carroll has been able to put her education to good use as CEO of Anglo American, a London-based mining company.
Starting as an oil geologist at Amoco, Carroll eventually moved to Alcan in 1988. By 2002, she became president and CEO of Alcan's primary metals group.
In 2007, Carroll became the first female -- and first person from outside the company -- to head Anglo American. Recently, she's shifted the company's focus to diamonds, platinum, and copper, doubling their operating profits from the previous year to $9.8 billion in 2010.
Alison Cooper
Company: Imperial Tobacco Group
Position: CEO

Alison Cooper was not intimidated when presented with the daunting task of filling the shoes of Gareth Davis, Imperial Tobacco's former chief executive, who had served in the role for 14 years. Cooper took the reins at the tobacco company in May 2010.
After leaving PriceWaterhouseCooper in 1999, Cooper moved to Imperial, where she has been working ever since. A mother and wife, Cooper has managed to balance work and home life, boosting Imperial's tobacco net revenues by 3% and their earnings per share up 7% in the first half of 2011, according to the company's mid-year report.
Carol M. Meyrowitz
Company: TJX
Position: CEO
Global 500 Rank: 442
TJX, which owns retail brands like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, promoted Carol Meyrowitz to president in October 2005. After two years in that role, she was named CEO in January 2007.
TJX reported a 6% rise in total revenue, totaling to $9.1 billion for first half of 2011.
A mother of two, Meyrowitz is also a philanthropist. She's donated to the Joslin Diabetes Center and is also a member on their board of overseers.
Ursula M. Burns
Company: Xerox

After studying mechanical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute (now the Polytechnic Institute of NYU) and receiving a master's in the same subject from Columbia, Burns began an internship at Xerox. She's been with the company ever since.
She met her husband, Lloyd Bean, while working at the company. The two have a daughter together, as well as a son from Bean's previous marriage.
Burns is not only the first African-American female CEO of a Fortune 500 company, she is also the first woman to succeed another female CEO. Anne Mulcahy, named Xerox's chief executive in 2001, passed the baton to Burns in July 2009.
Giulia Maria Ligresti

Giulia Ligresti has been CEO at Italian casualty insurance company Premafin Finanziara since 2008. Her family is one of the company's main shareholders.
Giulia also founded Gilli, a luxury fashion brand, in 2001. She now acts as the chairman of the company.
Giulia serves as chair of the Fondiaria SAI Foundation (her sister, Jonella, is the president of the foundation) and is active in several projects that help children in developing countries.
