There's just one hitch: they need jobs. The economy has been especially rough for Gen Y. And while the picture looks prettier than it did last July, the unemployment rate is still 23.8% for 16 to 19-year-olds and 13.5% for 20 to 24-year-olds, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As a result, Millennials' long-term earning potential and opportunity for career exploration is suffering. It may be a long time until youth employment stats are sunny, but a few enterprising people refuse to grow disillusioned. Here's what they're doing to help Millennials get on their feet. |

Their non-profit, OUR TIME, is trying to galvanize support for the authorization and funding of one million additional jobs in the national service (primarily AmeriCorps). So far, they've gotten about 112,000 signatures to support the cause, about one-tenth of the way to their million-signature goal. Segal doesn't envision young people digging ditches, per se -- he envisions them joining programs like Teach for America, City Year, and Habitat for Humanity. Segal argues that the project makes sense for taxpayers: "For every dollar of public and private funds invested in service positions, an average of $1.95 in benefits is generated for the members and communities served." OUR TIME also operates Buy Young, an online marketplace that lets users purchase items from businesses run by entrepreneurs under 30. |

The fellows, whose interests range from biotechnology to energy to robotics, are also given access to bigwig Silicon Valley mentors. The catch? The participants can't be enrolled in college for the fellowship's two-year duration. Libertarian-minded tech entrepreneur Thiel may have a BA and a law degree from Stanford (and he recently taught a class at his alma mater), but he's encouraging promising youngsters to go the Gates-Jobs-Zuckerberg route. These famous dropouts are testaments to the fact that if you're really, really good, you don't need to sit through years of lectures to make it big. |

Yang wants to channel that talent into what he views as the nation's economic engine: the world of startups. "We need the Fortune 100 companies, but let's face it: Exxon Mobil's not going to be adding that many jobs." The 37-year-old former corporate lawyer launched Venture for America in the summer of 2011. Similar in concept to Teach for America, VFA places its 40 fellows (who are paid between $32,000 and $38,000 a year) at start-ups in Detroit, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Providence. The competitive two-year program aims to recruit 80 to 200 fellows and to expand to several additional cities next year. VFA claims that it provides a clear bridge over the traditionally murky waters of entrepreneurship. Yang believes that one of the reasons ambitious, Ivy League grads wound up at those institutions in the first place is that they were looking for prestige and security. VFA argues that it offers a status marker of its own, which reduces the pain of passing up that job at Goldman Sachs (GS,Fortune 500) or McKinsey to work at a company with fewer than 10 people. And, Yang says, it's all for the best. |

"I was told I made the world's best iced tea." She also knows that getting employers in the hard-to-crack fields of film, television, fashion, and sports to even look at your resume often requires connections on the inside. Intern Sushi's setup helps the most ambitious applicants get a leg up in the application process. Prospective interns submit videos and other media instead of resumes and cover letters, giving applicants a chance to sell themselves more creatively. Applicants can join the site for free, but premium membership (which gives you early access to internship openings and unlimited application privileges) costs $8.99 a month. The service is free for the 2,600 companies that have signed on since the site's December launch, and some outfits -- like The Ellen DeGeneres Show -- have begun to hire interns (both paid and unpaid) exclusively through the site. The company is also looking into tracking how many internships turn into long-term jobs. Intern Sushi advises applicants to "Be picky"; in other words, they shouldn't just go for jobs that will look good on a resume. It has placed over 1,000 of its 20,000 users in 15 cities, and it's about to go national. |

In fact, he wrote a book about it. He and business partner Ryan Paugh, also 28, think other Millennials should consider passing on so-called real work. The pair founded the Young Entrepreneur Council -- an invite-only organization of 500 entrepreneurs all under 40 -- to educate, mentor, and introduce Millennials to the startup world. YEC-affiliated companies like Klout, LivingSocial, and College Hunks Hauling Junk claim to have created 20,000 jobs since the organization was founded in 2010. "We need to establish that idea that entrepreneurship is a viable career path in the [Gen Y] psyche," argues Gerber. "When you're talking to someone who is only five years older than you, someone who has really done it, it seems a lot more attainable, relatable, and plausible." |
