2003
Mark Zuckerberg launches Facemash, Harvard's version of "Hot or Not." The contentious site drew criticism for putting photos of students side-by-side and asking users to choose who was more attractive. FaceMash reportedly drew 450 visitors and 22,000 page views during its first evening online.
2004
Version 1.0 of "thefacebook" goes live from Zuckerberg's college dorm room with co-founders Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, and Eduardo Saverin behind the launch. The Facebook "Wall," now a staple of the social network, also makes its debut. By the end of the year, the social network claimed one million users at Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and Columbia.
2005
Zuck drops "the" from the company name after snatching the URL Facebook.com for $200,000. That same year, Facebook expands beyond colleges to high schools and goes international. Number of users as of May: over 5.5 million.
2006
The social network opens itself up to anyone with an email address and introduces the News Feed, a list highlighting what users are up to. Investor Peter Thiel pegs Facebook's worth at a whopping $8 billion, and Facebook supposedly turns down a $1 billion bid from Yahoo. Number of users: over 12 million.
2007
The Facebook Platform launches, allowing third parties to develop on top of it. "We want to make Facebook into something of an operating system so you can run full applications," Zuckerberg told Fortune at the time. The failed ad system Beacon launches and gets flack for publishing users' activities on partnered sites. Number of users as of May: over 24 million.
2008
Facebook co-sponsors the Presidential Debates with ABC News that January, and Facebook Chat -- an instant messenger for the social set -- goes live.
2009
Zuckerberg pays nearly $50 million to buy FriendFeed, an online activity aggregator, and also tests out "Facebook Lite," a leaner version of the social network. By the end of the year, Facebook has 350 million-plus active users.
2010
Zuckerberg sweats it out onstage over privacy questions at AllThingsD's D8 conference, so much so that he takes off his trademark hooded sweatshirt. He also donates $100 million to the Newark Public School System. "The Social Network" premieres, racking accolades with its compelling, if not-so-accurate depiction, of Facebook's humble beginings. Number of users: over 500 million.
2011
Saturday Night Live comedian Andy Samberg impersonates Zuckerberg onstage at Facebook's f8 conference before the CEO introduces a radical Profile redesign called Timeline. Zuckerberg also makes headlines when Fortune reports he aimed to eat "only what he kills."
2012
Zuckerberg negotiates Facebook's largest acquisition yet: the $1 billion purchase of popular photo-sharing mobile app Instagram. Oh yeah, the social network also goes public.
